In honor of moms {and Daddos} everywhere who have kids coming in the door from school with loads and loads of leftover workbooks and journals that the kids swear they’ll work on during the summer, ‘So please don’t throw any of it away’….. This is for you. Hang in there, take pictures and sneak it to the trash can.
At the end of each school year, I go through all of the boys’ class work they brought home through the year. It’s usually made up of precious memories of what their little hands made, their minds molded together during this once-in-a-lifetime moment in their lives. Also, it’s when I chunk a TON of papers secretly behind my back, into the trash under the sink.
This year when I went through my big middle’s end-of-year folder, I found myself crying and laughing out loud at the same time. My second grader has always been a character with his words. When he learned to write it out (with crazy adult-like handwriting I might add), the ‘Cole Quotes’ from my early days of blogging, simply became pencil to paper. What a gem these are:
Accountability as a principal’s kid. It’s a hard life.
What else does ‘Grammall’ need to tell me?
His teacher read one of the camping blogs and knew the story of Daddo not being a fisherman AT ALL. And we love our campfire ghost stories…
My dad’s name was Robert. Cole was 15 months old when Papaw died, but talks about him a lot. And my dad loved to eat turkey and fall asleep watching the Cowboys…. But he was nice and he loved him some Cole Man!
The Super Bowl bet…. Cherished memories.
Yes, son, get it together.
I’m quite certain he’ll be in politics some day.
And my favorite. Mother’s Day 2015.
I knew he never wanted to leave me. Stay forever. (Daddo days ‘no’. I say ‘it’s fine, baby.’)
And just last week I got a Cole quote, not on paper, but like the good ole days {with less speech impediment but just as much Texas drawl}…
‘Cole, when we’re finished washing my car and scrubbing the bugs off the rims, you go inside and shower…’
‘Ok but do I need to use soap?? Cause I just used soap on your car and I got it all over me….’
‘Yes Cole, USE SOAP!’
