Handling the ‘big stuff’

I’ve decided to add yet one more thing to my wonderfully busy life…. blogging! I already journal, have since I was 8 years old, I scrapbook and I TRY to videotape some memorable moments, but I felt perhaps blogging could help me ‘catch’ those tiny memories that can quickly escape our minds.

Just yesterday each of my precious boys reminded me that they, too, have ‘big stuff’ or stressers in their daily lives just as I do as an adult and parent. Yesterday morning around 8:15 Cole had one of his moments where it just couldn’t handle school and his four hour stretch of being away from me. It’s happened about 4 times this school year. I’m sitting in my classroom (I have a break period first) and I hear running little footsteps and  sniffling sounds traveling with it. In my room runs Cole, crying and saying, “Momma I need you.” He has run out of his classroom, out the elementary building, down the sidewalk to the high school and all the way to my room.  Quickly I receive an IM from the elem secretary asking me if Cole is there… “yes” I reply. I hug his neck and remind him that he cannot run out of his classroom like that. He tells me, “I just miss you so bad.” I eventually walk him back to his room and he finishes out his ‘school day’ successfully.  Currently Cole’s stress in life is separation; at bedtime, at school, and its mainly me at the moment. Next month he may be attached to Jake. But it’s his “big stuff” for now.

Will came home from school yesterday with a long face and tears in his eyes. For the first time this year he was told to change his behavior color in his kindergarten class.  Apparently, they were using markers in class and he decided it would be okay to mark on another student.  They were caught walking quickly around the room as Will was trying to keep the other boy from marking on him and he got in trouble. His demeanor after school that day, you’d think he was on trial in court. He felt so disappointed in himself for changing his color. While eating his snack he got a piece of paper and a pen and wrote his teacher Mrs. Spencer a note apologizing for his behavior…”soree for not minding.” Perfection in most things, especially school and sports, is Will’s “big stuff” right now. Hopefully the school thing will continue 🙂

Even big Rhett has problems handling the “big stuff” in his sheltered life which is spent mainly at 340 Hargis Dr in New london.  Last night while he was playing in the floor of his room, all dressed and ready for bed, I was down the hall and heard him kind of whine a little. I peeked in on him and saw he was up on his knees reaching for his beloved white, crocheted blanket. It was hanging over the side of his crib dangling just above his finger tips.  I walked in, took it and said “do you want this?” He grinned real big and reached for it, taking it and burying his face in its softness.  Stress? Maybe not to some, but for his little life of 9 months, having his blanket in view but just out of reach at bedtime…. that’s “big stuff.”
