The end of school marathon is over. The programs, field days, field trips, teacher gifts, dress-up days and class parties have come and gone. I am always so relieved at this time of year. Because I’m a teacher you say? Sure! But also because my kids are one step further into their awesome journey in life. It gets more and more fun and exciting for them each year.
Remember when your infant was trying to sit up for the first time and the look in his eyes when he saw the world from an upright view? From that moment on our kids are in for a whole slew of new adventures. Isn’t that just so exciting for them?!?!
That’s how I feel at the end of every school year. Other parents might tear up at graduations and other milestones. They may write about their sentiments of their babies growing up. I’ve always felt, well, kind of the opposite.
I’m as sentimental as they come, but I pour all of that into my kids’ scrapbooks, pictures and I guess this blog. I get it all out elsewhere. So when it comes to the events and actual ‘last days’ all I can think of is ‘Whoopee! On to the next year, milestone, and older kid event!’
It could have to do partly with still having two kids in daycare for two more years…
But just with my school boys, end of year means more exciting things in front of them. Their journey just gets bigger and better with every turning year. I’m so proud to be their mom. Whatever God has planned for them I know that it is Good and Wonderfully Planned in His Glory. How can I be sad about them going further and further through their life that was drawn out by Him just for them?! It’s so exciting for them!
So here are my two school boys on the morning of their last day of school for 1st and 3rd grade. It’s PJ day for one and football-game-with-high-school-players for the other. For me it’s nearing my babies’ 2nd and 4th grade years. More teeth to lose, friends to make, long division and cursive writing to learn, more independence and responsibilities to have and new life experiences to learn from.
Here’s to the journey our kids will travel in life. Push them through with supportive arms. Instead of selfishly wanting them to stay little forever, be excited for their next accomplishments.
Here’s to the end of the school year. You have these precious little monsters at home for the next three months. Enjoy every minute and look forward to their next step in life. Be it pre-school, kindergarten, junior high or high school, say ‘whoopee!’ with them and do a little jump in the air too.
