Senior Sunday on the Week My Son Played His Last Football Game

This social trend includes posting a picture every Sunday of your current High School Senior from any time in the past. I guess it doesn’t have to be every Sunday since I’ve skipped several weeks including the last three. You see, like with every social trend, you feel the need to keep up but life gets in the way. The year of having a Senior is C-R-A-Z-Y. I went through it with my oldest two years ago and just having one year to ‘relax’ from all the must-do’s was nice. But anyone who has a Facebook and posts any kind of pictures are part of a club of those of us who depend on a digital social album to recollect milestones decades from now.
We do it now from the pics we posted of our now 18 year old’s third birthday. Every one of those memories that pop up, remind us of how important it is to once again, and without fail, continue to post.

Well, here I am on this gray and gloomy (literal forecast) day and another Senior Sunday… and I’m doing laundry. But not just any laundry. I’m doing my son’s football laundry from Friday’s game for the last time. You see, all three of my football playing boys have brought home their cleats, receiving and linemen gloves, socks and other accessories the night of their games so Mom can make sure they’re not lost in the common wash at school. I also hang dry their gloves. This has been the routine every Fall since my oldest started playing in Junior High. It’s as normal as cleaning bedsheets and bathrooms.
So today is one more boy’s last Sunday football laundry. As I’m setting it out to dry I take a minute to just look at it all. That’s when I noticed the inside of his cleat. The entire inner sole had totally disintegrated. He played in these cleats as a senior running back and linebacker and they were absolutely torn to shreds. I had no idea. These were the same Adidas Adizero that I bought in June for his summer travel baseball. He wore the same cleats through football. Five and a half months wearing the same cleats.
I stood there just looking at these shoes. Thankful, grateful and blessed.
I’m not doing a lot of things right when it comes to social parenting trends. But a slap in the face I must be doing something right as a parent. No, my kid didn’t need to keep wearing these hard-plastic-no-sole-left shoes in one of the most physical sports out there. It wasn’t good for his feet. But the fact he was okay with doing so and didn’t bother with asking for a new pair….
He played 25 baseball games in three states in those cleats. He ran over 600 yards and made over 100 tackles in those cleats. Not a word. Just getting the job done.
So happy Senior Sunday my friends. This laundry is done.
