Will just finished his first Fall Baseball Season, as well as his first season playing baseball and not t-ball (machine pitch that is). It was also our family’s first experience with having multiple games during the school week as all of our sporting events have always been on Saturdays up until this point. Since the end of August the 5 of us have been juggling two soccer teams and one baseball team; their practices and games. For 6 weeks, I have made my weekly ‘menu’ while standing at the kitchen bar before heading off to the grocery store. What nights are late games? What nights are practices? Who’s practicing? Who’s taking him? What takes the least amount of time to cook or what can go in the crock pot that night? Sure, it’s been fun watching our kids do activities they LOVE, but as a family it has made us more structured, scheduled, and well just plain tired.
Will’s baseball team just had their last game last night. The Wingnuts was composed of 6,7, and 8 yr olds from Overton and West Rusk.
They played all their games in a Whitehouse league. Up until last night they were undefeated, pretty much smashing their competition…. yes, I’m a closet-boastful-mom. But who’s reading this right? This week they started the league tournament, single-elimination.
They squeaked out a win Tuesday 9-7 with their normally high batting averages seeing a quick decline. Last night was the championship, as well as the Wingnuts first defeat. It was a team they had, earlier in the season, beaten by at least 10-12 runs. But again, our bats didn’t show up.
Defensively the boys were sharp. After the game, we had tears, a few outbursts, and one really red, mad, yet quiet Will who looked alarmingly like his Daddo when he’s upset 🙂 But by the time the crowds had left the stands, some of the boys had already forgotten their sadness and were running the bases and pretending to be big leaguers. Aww, to be young again.
Soccer season we are wearing neon green again for the Grasshoppers and black and gray for the Titans. Will and Cole are for the first time NOT on the same sports team. They have responded fine with being on teams without their brother by their side, but Momma and Daddo are tired. Well, maybe it’s more the feeling of ‘Where is MY life?’ Our Saturdays have consisted of 4-5 hours hanging out in Kilgore or at the soccer fields with two games a couple hours apart. Baby brother has experienced a few of his first sunburns, public tantrums and CHEETOS! But we’re not complaining and neither is Rhett, at least we don’t think so. Will is playing U-8 this season on the big field, learning rules and positions. They lost their first game and have won them all since then.
They’re a young team and they all are really developing. Will really enjoys soccer and has experienced playing goalie and the field positions too.
He’s scored almost every game, and always comes off the field smiling. Only once has he had to leave the field in the middle of the game to go ‘poop’…. that’s another blog.
Cole and his Titans are a really fun team to watch. It is comprised of 3 light skinned boys and the rest ‘light brown’ skinned, as Cole says.
They’re all about the same age and you can tell those kids love to get out there and play ball. Cole has scored some goals, all with the celebratory fist punch and jog around the field.
He’s very much the definition of ‘teammate.’ I have more than a few pictures of him patting his players on the shoulder, giving them serious motivational speeches and making sure they all have water.
This Fall has been a season of growth for our family. We have learned a lot. Our boys are getting older, our activities are becoming busier and I have the feeling its only going to get worse…. I mean better.
This weekend is our first since early Sept that we don’t have anything! Its an open date for soccer so we have the trailer loaded and we’re headed to Martin Creek…. after the football game! Only fun will ensue; hiking, bike-riding, fishing, cooking, and a new tradition for us, Pumpkin Carving! A blog will follow….
